VICENZA – Violent weather once again strikes hard at agriculture in the lower Vicenza area, with a new wave of heavy rains, hailstorms, and flooding causing extensive damage to vineyards. The most affected areas are the municipalities of SAREGO, LONIGO, and VAL LIONA, where it is estimated that 30% of the grapes destined for the next harvest have already been lost. This situation is worrying for producers and strongly raises the issue of insurance coverage.
Already lost 30% of production: alarm in the countryside
According to an initial assessment conducted by Paolo Bolla, a technician at Condifesa TVB, agricultural companies are facing the immediate consequences of extreme events. The strong hailstorms and excessive water have caused grape cluster breakage, rot, and phytosanitary problems that are difficult to manage. “This is an event that comes at a delicate stage of the growing season,” explains Bolla, “and significantly compromises yields and product quality.”
Nadal (Condifesa TVB): “Without insurance, the risk is too high”
Valerio Nadal, president of Condifesa TVB, also intervened on the issue, emphasizing the importance of insurance to protect the income of agricultural entrepreneurs: “Our goal is to protect those who work the land. Faced with such violent weather events, the only solution is to get insured. We are among the leaders in Italy in terms of insured capital and number of members, and awareness among producers is growing that production cannot be left uncovered.”
Insurance coverage facilitated up to 70%
Nadal also pointed out that the coverage offered by the insurance and mutual system is supported by EU contributions, which can cover up to 70% of the policy cost. “Today, climate change makes it essential to protect investments,” he concludes, “especially in a sector like the wine industry, where the capital exposed to risks is high.”
