AVIANO – Land Poetry’s message of peace in the land of weapons: new action against war near Aviano base
A 40-meter poetic work to say no to militarization
On Sunday, June 29th, at 10:00 am, the silence of the countryside in Pordenone will be interrupted by an artistic and symbolic action destined to spark discussion. An independent collective of activists, led by the Friulian street poet Mathias PdS – Poet of the Evening, will carry out a new form of non-violent protest just a few kilometers from the US military base in Aviano.
In the heart of Friuli, in an area kept reserved to protect the landowners involved, a temporary Land Poetry installation will rise, over 40 meters long, visible from above via drone. An artwork that combines words, land, and critical thinking, designed to give shape to the widespread unease of a part of the population of the Northeast, concerned about the presence of nuclear warheads B61-12 in the area.
The slogan visible from the sky: “Tomb Makers”
Using old newspapers to compose giant letters, the activists will write the phrase “Tomb Makers” on the ground, ironically and provocatively altering the word “bombs” to turn it into a warning about death. A slogan that does not point fingers at individuals, but addresses “all forms of power that choose rearmament over dialogue,” explain the promoters.
The intervention comes after an informal investigation conducted in Pordenone, Udine, and Gorizia, which revealed widespread unease among citizens of all ages about the presence of nuclear arsenals in the region.
A poetic protest that becomes a social denunciation
This is the fourth action of Land Poetry organized by Mathias PdS, who has been carrying out a sensitization path through non-invasive artistic interventions for months, capable of merging activism and visual poetry. The goal? Stimulate an urgent debate on the consequences of militarization and the strategic function of the Aviano base in the context of a tense Europe.
In light of the recent geopolitical tensions between the United States and Iran, the nuclear risk is once again at the forefront. Aviano, the activists remind us, due to its position and logistical function, represents one of the sensitive targets in case of conflict, with direct implications for all of Italy.
Between art and civil commitment: the precedent of “Let’s Love Each Other”
The new installation ideally continues a path begun with previous actions such as the one in which the word “Arm yourselves” was transformed into “Let’s Love Each Other“. A powerful linguistic game, capable of overturning the dominant message through the power of public poetry and the language of the landscape.
The collective supporting Mathias is composed of local activists and ordinary people, who choose to act outside traditional channels, without political flags, but with a single mission: to open eyes, raise doubts, stir consciences.
“We are not against anyone – declare the organizers – but we want to draw attention to a reality that concerns us all and is still talked about too little.”
